One of Melanie’s favorite art mediums is button brooches. Her brooches are just beautiful and were the inspiration for the brooches I created. Accordion Fold Book by Terri Daugherty

I recently received an email from my friend Terri where she shared her beautiful accordion fold book that she made using my tutorial. I think she’s done a fabulous job.

She also shared her discovery of adhesive backed fabric paper from DCWV that worked great as substitute to bookbinding tape or cloth. She says it comes in two color combinations; the blue you see below and pink.

Tutorial – Making a Chipboard Shoe Picture Stand – Designed for Alpha Stamps

In this tutorial I’ll cover how to construct a picture stand using chipboard shoes and a chipboard nametag. These stands are simple to make with endless style and theme possibilities.

What You Will Need

Ruler

Pencil

Glossy Accents Glue or Glue That Works With Metal

X- Acto Knife

2 Small Hinges

Decorative Paper and Embellishments

Two ATC Sized Shoes

A Set of Ornate Nameplates

Constructing the Back of the Stand

Select one of the chipboard nameplates. I chose the longest one (the package comes with three different designs). Using a ruler and pencil, draw a line through the center of the nameplate.

Using a ruler and an X-Acto knife, cut along the line.

Next, decorate the nameplate. I used liquid chalk to color my nameplate and then papers from the Almanac 6” x 6” paper pad to decorate the front and back.

Place the nameplate on your table with what will be the front of the picture stand facing toward you and what will be the back of the picture stand facing the table. I chose to use different paper on the front and the back so the side mattered. It’s up to you if you want the sides to look different or not. Next, note the placement of the hinges in the picture below. Glue the hinges to the nameplate using Glossy Accents or a glue that works with metal. The hinge pin should be facing down towards the table. My hinges were originally gold. Before gluing the hinges in place I used Ranger Black Alcohol Ink to change the color.

To cover the holes in the hinge, I used metal beads. Other options are; faux pearls, rhinestones or the heads of brads with the prongs removed. Just be careful not to use anything too bulky or you will not be able to bend the stand.

Decorating the Shoes

I started decorating my shoes by punching holes for ribbon using a Crop-A-Dile hole punch. It punches through thick chipboard as if it was butter.

I used two different papers from the Almanac paper pad to decorate the shoes. Notice, I re-punched the holes after attaching the paper. Using a makeup sponge, I edged the shoes Black Soot Distress Ink.

I added antique gold fold-over bails and black silk ribbon to the shoes.

Once your shoes are decorated, you can glue together the hinged nameplate and the shoes. I used Glossy Accents. Note the placement of the nametag on the shoes in the picture below. Make sure that the shoes are even so that you don’t end up with a lopsided stand. I suggest placing the shoes along a ruler.

I’ve used several of the papers from the Almanac paper pad to decorate the back of the art piece.

To create the art piece displayed on the picture stand, I used two of the frames from the London Ornate Resin Frame Set. I mounted the small frame on the back of the large one. The image comes from the Drama Queens Collage Sheet.

Marie Antoinette Inspired Picture Shoe Stand

In this version, I decided to keep the original color of the nameplate and I embossed it with pink roses. To the top, I added a metal butterfly and a pink tulle bow.

The shoes are decorated with various papers, gold beads and a metal heart filigree that I bent before attaching. I also added stamped flourishes on the back of the shoes. If you add heavier items to the shoe stand as I have in this version, you need to make sure that they are balanced or your stand will fall over. For example, if I had just added the butterfly and tulle to the top and not the heart filigree to the bottom, the stand would fall backwards.

Marie Inspired Art with Shoe Picture Stand - Designed for Alpha Stamps

A few days before my stuff came from Alpha Stamps, I met my friend Sue Young for lunch. As a present, she gave me a piece of her art and a picture stand with which to display it. Both items were sitting on my work table when the box came from Alpha Stamps. I unpacked the box and began playing with the small set of chipboard shoes; making them walk etc. The kind of silly stuff kids do. All of the sudden synapses started firing in my brain. I looked at the picture stand and looked at the shoes and I thought “these would be perfectly for the base of a picture stand”. The package from Alpha Stamps also included some chipboard tags, which I thought would work great for the back of the stand. I guess the moral of the story is, do silly things with your art supplies, you never know what might happen.

Paris Inspired Accordion Fold Book

The overall dimensions of this book are 5 ¼” x 6” and it’s 1 ¾” thick. The cover is loaded with layers of paper, stamping, rub-ons, paper images, beaded trim, ribbon and other dimensional embellishments. The inspiration for the book came from the image of the woman. She is from a vintage perfume ad.

I used a stencil to add the peach color to the fabric spine.

Marie Antoinette Diorama – Designed for Alpha Stamps

In the past I’ve created a variety of Marie Antoinette inspired art but never a diorama. The inspiration for this piece was Alpha Stamp’s Painterly Props collage sheet. The overall dimensions are 11” high by 12” wide by 3” deep. The floor and the top are made from foamcore board. The back is made from chipboard. The columns and pink drapes on the front are backed with thin chipboard and supported and attached to the top with wooden dowels.

To create the design on the floor, I used a square punch to punch two different patterned papers. I glued them to the foamcore in a diagonal pattern and I used gold metallic stickers to create the grout lines.

The urn containing the flowers looks dimensional but it’s not. I used the same image twice (one the reverse of the other) and backed them both with heavy cardstock. Next, I added foam core tape to the inside middle and glued the sides together. This method created a pocket in the middle which gave me room to insert the flower arrangement.

Hidden in the top of the diorama are foam core beams that I used for hanging the lace curtains on the left side and the turquoise fiber on the right side. The flowered curtains in the far back on the left are made by accordion folding paper. I used gold chain to hang tassels that I died turquoise with alcohol ink.

The chandelier is made from German Scrap (center support), brass jewelry drops (pieces holding the candles and beads), clear plastic beads hanging from the drops and clear long beads for candles which I painted white (these are attached with wire). I used a dollop of yellow metallic paint for the candle flames.

To the foam core at the top, I attached paper borders and a piece of carved wooden trim (used for dollhouses). The swirls at the top are chipboard. On the top, is a piece of chipboard covered in decorative paper that I can lift to access the beams inside the top (in case I need to fix or add something).

I used box feet on the corners to hold the sprays of hanging flowers.

French Kiss ATC Designed For Alpha Stamps

In addition to designing the Vintage French Painter’s Canvas Book for Alpha Stamps, I also designed this ATC using the French Kiss 6 x 6 paper pack. I thought you might enjoy going through my design process step by step.

I started by covering an ATC sized piece of chipboard with the burgundy paper from the collection. Next, with a pencil, I drew an oval the size of the frame I intended to use. This oval acts as a guide for paper placement in future steps.

Then next step involves tearing small pieces of paper from various paper patterns in the collection. Using a small sponge I inked the edges of the torn pieces.

I glued the torn paper pieces to edges of the ATC using the oval as my guide. Note, at the top of the ATC I glued the paper slightly over the oval line. You’ll see why in a further step.

Next, I trimmed the excess paper along the edges of the ATC.

I used a gold German scrap frame that I painted black with Ranger Alcohol ink to frame the image. Note how you can see the paper at the top, peeking out under the frame. Now can see why I glued the paper over the pencil oval guide. I next added some torn pieces on top of the frame.

I added the Eiffel Tower that came from the Paris Collage Sheet. . To give it a more vintage feel, I tore the image rather than cutting it. In the bottom right corner I added a piece of cheese cloth. I first the cloth by lightly sponging it with the same ink I used to ink the edges of the paper.

To balance the black in the frame I added a few black rub-ons at various points on the ATC. Next, I started adding dimensional embellishments. In the bottom right corner I glued a clock button to a piece of filigree.

To the bottom right corner I added a sprig of brass leaves, fabric leaves and a beaded flower. To balance the weight of the items in the right bottom corner, I added embellishments to the upper left corner with a silk ribbon bow and a brass fleur de lys with a burgundy Swarovski crystal. To attach the ends of the ribbon to the ATC I used miniature glue dots.

As a final touch I added a few flowers to the bottom right corner in colors that complemented the papers. Note how the weight of the embellishments is heaver on the bottom right than on the upper left. Without the embellishment at the top the bottom would feel too heavy. With equal embellishment at both ends the focal point (the image) would be overwhelmed. Also note the vertical line the tower creates contrasted by the oval of the frame.

The paper tearing technique is a great way to use leftover scraps of paper. You can scale this technique up and use it for a greeting card, a scrapbook page or other piece of art.

Vintage French Painter’s Canvas Book – Designed For Alpha Stamps

This project started with Leslie of Alpha Stamps sending me a picture of the French Kiss 6x6 paper pad and asking me if I would like to create something using these papers. I said “YES”! These papers are so up my alley. Next, I had to decide which images I would use as a focal point and I couldn’t resist using the Cléo de Mérode collage sheet. Her images are some of my favorites. With the papers dictating the style and with Cleo as my muse, I decided to make a vintage French book from two painter’s canvases. I love using canvases because the wood frame on the backside creates little niches that you can fill will all kinds of goodies and it’s really easy to hinge the canvases together.

INSIDE OF THE BOOK

I started with two blank 6” x 6” painters canvases. You can use any size you like just make sure that wooden frame creates open spaces in the back. Some really small canvases don’t have much of a niche in the back.

Before you hinge the canvases together, paint, stain, ink, paper etc. all of the edges on both canvases. If you want to paint, stain, ink etc. the entire surface of the canvases, go ahead and do that now, but don’t add any dimensional objects to the front or back of the canvases until they are hinged together. Creating bulk at this stage makes the hinging process more difficult. I decided to use a vintage aging technique on the edges of the canvases and paper for the front and back of the canvases.

Hinging the Canvases Together

Once you finish decorating the edges, hold the two canvases together with the niches facing each other (backsides of the canvas facing each other). You can see in photo below there is a slight gap between the canvases. When you decorate the edges and backsides of the canvases, it creates a little extra bulk. Having a slight gap insures that the book closes properly.

With the canvases held together (with a slight gap), place your hinge or hinges along spine of the canvases (as in the picture below). The number of hinges you use depends on the size of the hinge and the size of the canvases. I used two hinges that are 1/2” long by 5/8” wide and the center of the hole is 1/4” from the edge of the canvas.

Using a pen or pencil mark the placement of the hinge holes.

Remove the hinges and pre punch the holes using an awl and hammer. Pre-punching makes it a little easier to insert the screws.

Screw the hinges into the canvases. Don’t use nails or glue as they will not hold. If the hinges you purchase don’t come with screws you can purchase tiny screws at any hardware store.

The embellishment at the corners my canvases are images of vintage jewelry.

Decorating the Insides of the Canvases

After you have hinged the canvases together, I suggest decorating the inside of the canvases first. If you start with the outside of the canvases they won't lay flat on your work surface when you get ready to work on the inside, making it harder to paint, ink, apply rub-ons, paper and other embellishments. On the inside of my book I dry brushed brown paint on the wood frame.

To the inside surfaces I added decorative paper, paper images, rub-ons and flat metal embellishments. I kept the elements I added to the outside edges as flat as possible to make it easier to close the book. In the niches I added the bulkier elements like a mini glass inkwell, a pin nib attached to a wooden skewer, a wax seal, flowers and a metal frame and gate.

Decorating the Front and Back Covers

The key to creating the look of this book is lots of layers. I decided to use paper as my base layer for both the front and back covers. I started by choosing two papers from the French Kiss paper pack. I tore holes in the middle and sides of the top paper then glued the papers together. This technique allows the paper on the bottom to show through the paper on the top and gives them a worn look. Then I used a technique to make the paper look even more worn and tattered.

Front Cover Décor

For the next layer I added the focal point image (Cleo), a paper clock, various rub-ons (French writing and the Eiffel Tower), and rubber stamped designs and writing. The next layer consisted of dimensional items such as died cheese cloth, buttons, vintage lace, decorative straight pins, flowers, beaded trim and a butterfly.

Lastly, I added the Shadow Box Shrine. I used a distressing technique on the frame and applied rub-ons to the glass. I backed the inside of the shrine with the French Kiss paper, then added an image of a weathered statue, paper flowers and a key. The final touch is the key hole of the front.

After assembling the décor for the front cover, I glued it to the canvas and married the distressing technique I used on the edges of the canvas, to the edges of the paper on the front cover.

Just as in the front cover, I choose two papers from the French Kiss Paper pack, tore holes in the middle and sides of the top piece of paper and glued them together.

I added the focal point image (Cleo), paper images, rub-ons, lace, a wooden gate and pieces of filigree. Once the décor for the back cover was assembled I glued it to the canvas. The image of Cleo is a rub-on I made using the Alpha Stamps Cleo Collage Sheet. Click here to see the tutorial on how to make your own rub-ons.

Opening the Book

On the edges where the book opens I added beads with filigree drops. I used the awl to poke holes into the canvas. Next, I inserted a metal pin through the filigree drop and bead, and glued the end of the pin into the hole.

Broche' Bouton from Debi Huntsman

Broche' Bouton

I made this button brooch for a swap in the Marie Antoinette Mail Art Group hosted by Melanie Hall. The overall dimensions are approximately 2” x 3”. The base of is made from pieces of filigree. Then you collage buttons and other metal pieces, pearls, jewels etc. It has a pin back so you can wear it or attach it to a purse, pillow, fabric box etc.

You can see my some of my design process below. I first drew a box on paper to indicate the maximum size the piece could be (according to the swap rules). I then laid out the filigree. I knew that I wanted something dangling from the piece so I drew in some pearls.

Many times when I am designing a piece of art I will do a crude drawing first. On paper, I consider dimension, balance and composition. Then I start laying out the design. If I am really pleased with the design and if it has lots of layers and components, I photograph the design before pulling it apart to permanently reassemble the piece. That way I’m usually pleased with the end result.

Mardi Gras

The overall dimensions of this piece are 7 ½” x 3 ½”.

My design process started with the mask at the top. After assembling it using various metal bits and pieces, feathers and glitter I then moved on to deciding how to use it. The mask has been sitting on my worktable for several months waiting to be used. I’m happy to have finally done something with it.

Altered Bottle by Creative Team Member Karol Taylor

Karol started with an old tequila bottle that her daughter Karyn filled with bubble bath and had given it to her as a present. After 15 years or so, the bubble bath had turned from pink to kind of a greyish pink so out it went. She used Glossy Accents to glue Arnolds Grummer’s Sparkling Mica Dust along the bottom edges and up the corners of the bottle. It also comes in gold and copper. Karol She glued faux pearls and a combination of metal, glass and paper flowers. She used a hot glue gun to adhere the flowers as they just wouldn’t seem to stick to the glass with glossy accents. She made the pearl necklace using a sting of faux pearls and a Tim Holtz Bauble. The white pearl is colored with a pink alcohol marker.

She filled the inside of the lid with pink sand and then made a stopper to hold it in place. As a final touch she put five stocks with tiny pink flowers on the inside of the bottle.

Mardi Gras Themed Altered Bottle by Creative Team Member Marilyn Miller

Marilyn started by stamping the bottle with black StazOn ink. She then applied clear embossing powder and melted the powder with a heat tool. She added foiled Stickabilities around the neck and around the bottom. The bottle is filled with Mardi Gras colored feathers. As decoration she used different colored shaped stones, fleur de lis, masks and string beads.

The top is a cork to which she inserted feathers and glued on stones, flowers and a mask. She used a hot glue gun to glue on the bead feet to the bottle.

With Mardi Gras fast approaching I’ll be posting some carnival themed art over the next week. This first piece is something I designed for Alpha Stamps. The top and the bottom are made of plastic craft organizers connected by wooden skewers. The hanging windows are German Scrap.

The mask is made from a combination of feathers (I dyed white feathers orange using Ranger Alcohol Ink), Stamped Flourishes to which I added glitter, a gold brass mask to which I added glitter and white leaf stickpins.

I recently stumbled upon Evelyn’s My Fanciful MUSE blog and WOW was I excited. I was like a kid in a candy store. Evelyn’s blog is crammed full of fabulous regency period (Jane Austen) art and images. There are fashion plates, furniture, curtains, scenery, gardens and more. The blog also includes lots of historic information and literature from the period. She has spent the past 9 months meticulously digitally cleaning, altering, enhancing and posting the images. It’s a true labor of love. Evelyn has done a suburb job and generously offers them free to you to download and use in your art. All she asks is that you give her credit if you publish or post art that uses her images.

Marie Inspired Paper Fan – Designed for Alpha Stamps

This is a fan I designed for Alpha Stamps. I started with triangular shaped blades. The front paper is Love Letters scrapbook paper. Sandwiched between the front and back decorative paper is a thin piece of chipboard.

After assembling each blade I inked the edges. Next, I added Baroque Dresden borders to the ends of each blade (front and back). I decorated the blades with images of Marie from three different collage sheets. The images are glued to paper from the Timeless paper pad and framed with small Dresden oval frames. I added images of flowers and more gold German scrap. The blades are secured with a brad to which I added ribbon and beading. I glued a piece of filigree to the brad.

I attached ribbon along the back of the blades to act as a stop to keep the blades from opening too far. I glued a piece of paper at the points on the blade where I glued the ribbon to the blade.

The ribbon folds between the blades when the fan is closed.

Sweet Nothings Paper Fan

This simple heart shaped fan was made from the Sweet Nothings 6 1/2” paper pack that you can find at Alpha Stamps. The package comes with a variety of pattern sheets including gold foiled paper. It also contains images, tags and borders. I used the patterned paper for the fan blades and then on each blade I collaged a variety of images from the paper pack. As a final touch I inked the blade edges and added gold stickers and rub-ons.

The fan is held together with a cherub button. I threaded a piece of wire through the shank of the button. The wire acts as a stop to keep the shank in place. I bent the wire in the back, glued it and covered the wire and hole with gold stickers.

The ribbon running along the back acts as a stop to keep the fan from opening too far. I used a heart shaped punch to punch little hearts. I used the hearts to cover the points where the ribbon is glued to the blades

Final Altered Jeweler's Tin

This is the third and final altered tin I made for the “Naughty Valentine Tin” swap hosted by Alpha Stamps. Just like the others I drilled holes in the tin so that I could insert flowers, leaves etc. I added glue (Glossy Accents) on the inside of each hole to keep the embellishments in place.

2nd Altered Jeweler’s Tin

This is the second of the altered tins I’m making for the Naughty Valentine Swap hosted by Alpha Stamps. The unaltered tin measures approximately 2” wide by 1” deep.

Just as in the first tin I used a drawer knob as the base. I painted it silver and added blue German scrap. On top of the knob I glued a piece of gold filigree to which I added blue and antique gold beads.

I also drilled a hole in the tin just as in the first tin. It’s through the hole that I inserted the flowers, beading and fan. I covered the side of the tin with ribbon trim and German Scrap.

Madame de Pompadour Altered Bottle - Designed for Alpha Stamps

I designed this bottle for Alpha Stamps. The bottle was about 1½” high before altering and all four sides are decorated. Once I added the feet and stopper, the overall height of the finished piece was 3½”. I really loved working with this bottle as the sides are very flat. Some bottles look flat but they curve slightly in or out.

I started by stamping and embossing each side of the bottle using the Enchanted Clear Stamp Set. Click here for a tutorial on how to stamp, emboss and paint glass. I painted the bottle using green metallic paint.

Next, I added German scrap to the bottom and the neck of the bottle. I used alcohol inks to paint the German scrap at the bottom green. I mounted the images of Madame de Pompadour in oval settings. To make the oval settings look more like a cameo, I added Glossy Accents on top of the image.

I painted the feet with the same metallic paint as I used on the glass. At the mouth of the metal birds is a loop. I used the loops to hang the rosary chain. After attaching the rosary chain to all of the birds, I glued the birds onto the glass using Glossy Accents. Lastly, I added the gold rose charms and filled the centers with green Stickles.

The bottle came with a cork stopper which I painted. I inserted the fan in a slit I cut in the top of the cork. I painted the fan gold to match the other metal pieces and added green crystals.

Marie at the Opera Accordion Folded Book – Designed for Alpha Stamps

I designed this accordion folded book for Alpha Stamps.

The bookbinding tape that I used on the spine was originally white. I tea dyed the tape to give it a more antique look. The tape lost some of its tackiness when I soaked it in the tea so I had to add some additional adhesive. The design on the spine is a rub-on transfer.

Altered Jeweler's Tin

I created this altered tin for the Naughty Valentine Swap hosted by Alpha Stamps. This is the first of three tins. The unaltered tin measures approximately 2” wide by 1” deep. The finished dimensions are 4” wide by 3 ¼ high.

I started by drilling two holes in opposite sides of the tin towards the back of the tin. After drilling the first hole I inserted a wooden skewer through the hole and used it to figure out where drill the hole on the opposite side. The holes are to accommodate the flowers.

I added paper to the inside of the tin and re-opened the holes. I decided to cover the back and sides with paper. Since the edges of the tin are round, it is impossible to completely cover them so I first painted them gold.

The next step was tricky. Since I was inserting the flowers through the holes, I needed to attach the paper to the outside first. But I couldn’t cover the outside with paper before adding the lid. I couldn’t add the lid until I added the flowers and the inside image. It was a "what come first" moment ‘the chicken or the egg”. I solved the problem by gluing the outside paper to just the area where the hole were. Then I re-opened the holes, inserted the flowers through the holes, and glued the flowers in place.

I needed to create a “false bottom” as the stems of flowers create bulk. Next, I added layers double stick tape to the back of the tin until the tape was flush with the stems. Now when I insert the image into the tin it will stick to, and rest on, the tape.

I inserted the image into the tin and added the lid. The lid is painted gold and edged with gold metallic stickers.

Once the lid was in place, I finished glueing down the paper on the outside of the tin.

The base of the piece is made from a porcelain drawer knob to which I added gold metallic stickers. Even though the stickers are backed with adhesive, I added just a little Glossy Accents to make sure they would stick to the porcelain. I used Glossy Accents to glue on all of the elements of this piece.

The final touches were to glue the knob to the tin, add a decorative metal piece at the top and paper birds to the edge.

Marie Antoinette Valentine Domino Book

I stamped both dominos with black StazOn ink. To the front I added a white resin frame. Next, I glued on a bunch of flowers and heart stickpins. I covered the stems with a heart button (with the shank removed).

The sides of the domino are coated with a mixture of pink mica flakes, gold flakes, pink microbeads and red glitter.

I coated the sides of the dominos with Glossy Accents and then pressed the sides into the mixture.

I’ve received a lot of feedback from you that you enjoy hearing what I have planned for you. So instead of just giving you a look ahead for the next month (which is what I usually do), I’ll clue you in on what’s in store for the next few months. Yes, I do plan a few months in advance. I know that it’s anal, but that’s what works best for me. I think it must come from years of building computer software and having to plan product launches way in advance.

This accordion folded “Vintage Theatre” Book was the end result of an ATC swap hosted by Ali Brandist. All of the participants sent Ali their cards. She created the cover and then attached our cards to a piece of accordion folded cardstock. Her method makes a cute book which you can display closed or open.

She instructed us to put our information on the top of the card so that when it was attached to the accordion folded paper you could still see the information. Ali is so clever.

Tutorial – “How’s My Hair” Accordion Fold Mini Book Designed for Alpha Stamps

Accordion folded books are simple to make and require no sewing. Everything is assembled with glue. You can make them any size you want and can use them to display art, as a journal, as scrapbook or as a piece of art. The new Rectangular Fleur de Lys Frames carried by Alpha Stamps make perfect book covers. I also thought that Alpha Stamp’s new humorous “How’s My Hair” rubber stamp set and collage sheet would make a fun topic for a book.

The new stamps and images are based on the craze of the French court in the 1770s (Marie Antoinette’s time) of creating huge hairstyles called “le pouf”. Hair dressers used cushions made of fabric or cork and the woman’s own hair as well as added hair pieces that would be combed over and piled on top of the cushions. Next were added enormous curls, feathers, lace, flowers and other ornaments. The bigger the hair the higher the status!

What you will need:

2 Pieces of Thin Ribbon 18” Long

1 Sheet of 12 x 12 Cardstock.

A Piece of Chipboard at Least 2 ¾” x 3 ¼”

Decorative paper, embellishments and images for the covers and pages.

Scoring Tool

Scissors

Glue

Creating the Book Pages

The first step is to create the inside pages of the book. I suggest using cardstock because decorative paper usually has a white interior that is exposed when folded so your book pages may end up with a white edge. Once the pages are created you can add decorative paper, images, embellishments, etc.

Cut Cardstock Strips

From a sheet of 12 x 12 cardstock cut 2 strips of paper that are 2 5/8” wide.

Score and Fold the Strips of Cardstock

Score the first strip of paper at intervals of 2 1/8”. You should end up with 5 score lines. Fold first strip of paper along the score lines. Score the second strip of paper at intervals of 2 1/8” creating only 3 score lines. Fold the second strip of paper along the score lines. The first strip should have 5 panels or pages and a partial page at the end. The second strip should have 3 panels or pages and a large extra piece at the end.

Cut away the large extra piece at the end of the second strip along the last score line. This should leave you with 3 pages.

Join Together the Cardstock Strips

Glue the two folded strips of paper together by attaching the short page on the first strip of paper to the first page on the second strip of paper.

Below is a picture of how your cardstock strips should look when they are combined. There should be a continuous folded strip of paper with 8 pages.

Note: This particular book has 8 pages. You can have as many pages as you would like by simply combining more strips of paper. The only rule is that you must have an even number of pages in order for the folds of the pages to attach properly to the covers.

Decorate the Book Pages

First, decorate the inside pages. You must be careful to decorate the correct side. Lay the accordion folded pages in front of you. The side that is the “inside” of the book is the one where the last page on each end lays flat if you press it down to a surface without undoing the folds (see the picture below). The side that is the “outside” or back of the book is the one where the end pages don’t lay flat and form a hill with the next page (see the picture below). Also be careful to pay attention to direction when decorating both sides. You don’t want your images going one direction on the inside and another direction on the outside.

Decorate the Inside Pages
I started decorating the inside pages by cutting pieces of decorative paper that I then glued to each page. I like to cut the paper slightly smaller than the page so that the cardstock acts as a frame for each page. I used papers from the Sweet Nothings Paper Pad. Before gluing the paper to the pages I stamped and edged the paper using gold ink and a rubber stamp with an image of swirls. After attaching the paper to each page I added images from the Alpha Stamps How’s My Hair and Paper Doll Fans collage sheets. I finished up with the banners of French words and flowers from the Pink Roses Dresden Scrap. The images at each end are framed with Small Dresden Oval Frames. The thing to remember about decorating your pages is not to use anything that is too bulky.

Decorate the Outside (Back) Pages

When you decorate the back you can do something as simple as just adding decorative paper or you can also add images etc., it’s up to you. When decorating the outside or back don’t decorate the first and last page. The first and last pages are used to attach the accordion folded pages to the covers of the book. As you can see below, I only decorated the six pages in the middle.

I decorated the back of my book with paper from the Sweet Nothings Paper Pad and Scripty Scrapbook Paper; edging and stamping the paper as I did for the front. I then added images from the Alpha Stamps Fragonard’s Lovers and Stolen Moments collage sheets. Lastly I added bows and fleur de lis that I punched from the Sweet Nothings Paper Pad.

Creating the Book Covers

Cut the Back Chipboard Cover

For the front book cover, I used the small Rectangular Fleur De Lys Chipboard Frame that measures 2 ¾” x 3 ¼”. This chipboard set of frames is great for making book covers.

For the back book cover I cut a 2 ¾” x 3 ¼”piece of chipboard. The chipboard was about the same thickness as the Fleur De Lys frame. If all you have is thin chipboard you can cut more than one piece and glue them together.

Decorate the Covers
I painted and stenciled the front and back covers on both sides. You could also add paper, ink, rub-ons or any other flat embellishment at this time. I don’t add any dimensional embellishments until after the book is assembled as it makes it hard to attach the pages to the covers.

Attach Ribbon to the Front and Back Covers
Glue a strip of ribbon to center of the backside of each cover. The ribbons are used to tie the book closed. For this book you will need two pieces of ribbon approximately 18” long. Use ribbon that is thin and not stiff. For this book I used Seam Binding from Alpha Stamps. The ribbon is nice and thin, feels like silk and is easy to tie. Don’t worry if the glue shows through the ribbon as the inside pages will cover the ribbon.

Assemble the Book
Glue the first page of the book to the inside of the front book cover. Center the page on the cover (see below).

Glue the last page to the inside of the back book cover. Center the page on the cover (see below).

Add Dimensional Embellishments

Now that the book is assembled you can add dimensional embellishments to the covers.

The images on the front and back of my covers are from the Alpha Stamps How’s My Hair Rubber Stamp Set. The set includes 11 different images. I stamped the images on glossy paper using Black StazOn and then embossed the images using clear embossing powder. Next, I backed the stamped images with cardstock to give them more support, particularly since the image on the front of the book is attached to the outside of a frame and is not flat against the cover. I painted images with Twinkling H2O paint. I then added gold trims and rhinestones and pearls.

After attaching the images to the front and back cover I then added dimensional embellishments like the flowers, leaves, crown, mirror, and fan

Since the ribbons are used to tie the book closed on each side. To open the book you can untie both ribbons or…

you can just untie the ribbon on the right side of the book and thumb through the pages like a traditional book.

Larger Accordion Fold Book

For the book below I used the larger Rectangular Fleur de Lys Frame that measures 4” x 4 3/4”. The inside pages measure 3 x 3 ¾” which makes them the perfect size to display ATCs.

I like to attach the ATC to the page on the right and display information about the ATC on the left page. To attach the ATC I use a couple of small Glue Dots. I like Glue Dot’s because you can remove the ATC without damaging it or the book.

Marie Shoe Book Designed for Alpha Stamps

Back in December I was busy designing all kinds of Marie Antoinette Inspired art which I will be posting here over the next few weeks. The first piece is a Marie inspired shoe book. The size of the unaltered chipboard shoe is 4” x 6”. The front and back covers are made from the chipboard shoes. I used the chipboard as a template to create 4 cardstock pages for the inside of the book. I used a jump ring tied with ribbons to put the book together.

Some of the images on each page stickup past the top of the shoe and when all the pages are stacked together you can see them peaking up behind the first page.

I used decorative paper, images from various collage sheets (see the list below), ribbon, buckles and ink to decorate each page.

Altered Bottle

This bottle’s overall dimensions are 7 ½” x 3”. I used decorative beads for the feet. The gold on the top, neck and bottom of the bottle are metallic stickers. They come in all sorts of designs and sizes. I purchase mine at Frantic Stamper. The bottle is wrapped in beaded and fabric flowers and leaves. The neck of the bottle is wrapped in beaded flowers. The stopper is a picture frame. I painted the brass dragonflies (purchased at Alpha Stamps) on the front with metallic paints and added Swarovski crystals for the eyes. I used Glossy Accents to attach all of the elements.

I have several more bottles siting on my worktable so stay tuned for more.

Another Dress Form in the Series

I finished another of the dress form series I’ve been working on over the past few months. The bottom of the skirt is made from a fan turned upside down. I then backed it with lace and beaded trim. I used images of vintage jewelry, paper flowers and metal flowers to decorate the bottom of the skirt. The sleeves are images of jewelry to which I added Glossy Accents to create dimension. The overall size of the piece is 3” x 7 ½”.

Marie ATC with A Fabric Background

The background of this piece is brocade fabric that I attached to chipboard. There is so much gorgeous fabric particularly brocades, so if there is enough interest I’ll do a short tutorial on options for using fabric as a background. I painted the brass decorative piece at the top and at the bottom with metallic paints and alcohol inks. The pink roses were originally white. I used alcohol ink to paint them. If you touch just the edges of the petals the ink will soak slowly down the petal and you will get a gradation of color.

Black and Gold Marie Antoinette ATC

This is sort of a non-traditional color scheme for Marie. I used an image of a bust of Marie and set it in an image of a vintage piece of jewelry. To make the image of the jewelry look more real, I added pearls. The piece is hung from a real key and then accented with a string of faux pearls. You can find the beaded trim at the bottom at Alpha Stamps.
